You. Can. Never. Have. Enough.

Washi Tape and Wrapping Paper, That Is.

Gearing up for what is commonly described as ‘The Silly Season’, we here at Pulp are getting serious about our gift wrapping arsenal.

The pre-game swathing of gifts warm-up is real. Take a peek over our shoulder and see what we have on offer.

But first, let's delve into a historical recap of gift wrapping. (You know you want to):

Wouldn’t ya know it, the first recorded use of wrapping gifts with paper dates back to the Chinese Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE), where it was used for encasing money!  Yep, the green stuff. Cash, Funds. Finances. Coins. Notes. Wrap 'em up and give 'em out. That was the drill.

Wrapping the Yuan symbolised respect, which still holds today, with the use of hong bao (red envelopes) to present to the lucky recipient.

Then Korea entered the chat.

During the Three Kingdoms period (57–668 CE), Koreans used fabric to wrap gifts, believing it would bring protection and good fortune. Sweet!

Meanwhile, in Japan the furoshiki, a square piece of cloth, developed during the Edo period (1603–1868) was used for wrapping and transporting gifts. Cool!

Fast forward a few hundred years to Victorian England when/where the wealthy began using paper, ribbons, and lace to disguise gifts, making it a symbol of luxury. Fancy!

And of course, the United States wasn't gonna be left out of this synopsis!

The modern gift wrap industry was born out of an accident in 1917 when the Hall brothers (famous for Hallmark cards), who ran a stationery store, sold out of a decorative French envelope lining paper, leading them to produce their own decorative gift wrap the following year. Innovation!

Enough back story, let’s get into how you can create your own gift wrapping histories and memories. Go!

Such a handy tape to have around the home and office. MT Masking Tape helps unleash creativity and deliver colour into any application. Japanese company Kamoi has been producing various forms of adhesive masking tape and washi tape for over 90 years, largely for industrial use. What we now know as MT Tape really began in 2006, after three women approached Kamoi and showcased the beautiful craft projects they’d been making with the industrial tape. Their visit inspired an entirely new direction and range for the MT brand washi tape.
