The tradition of carving jack-o'-lanterns originated in Ireland, where it began with carved turnips, not pumpkins. Controversy! They were originally meant to ward off evil spirits. I guess that turnips are scarier than pumpkins…
In Ireland, it’s a custom to bake a dense fruitcake called Barmbrack with a ring, a coin, and a rag baked inside to signify a person's fortune. Mystical!
The modern practice of trick-or-treating has roots in an old Irish and Scottish custom called "guising," where people would dress up, perform a trick (like reciting a poem), and receive a treat in return. Trick or treaters unite!
