Before we wax lyrical about the features and benefits of Birdy Ceramic Egg Cups, let’s guddle in the historical waters of the egg cup.
It all began 200 years ago. Basically, when the ability to boil an egg was ‘invented’, so too was the egg cup! Who 'dathunkit, but Ancient Romans enjoyed a boiled egg to break their fast! Ergo, they used small vessels to hold them. Silver egg cups were found in the ruins of Pompeii (a Roman city that was destroyed by the fatal eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79 AD).
Ancient breakfast culture for the win!
And you know, once the trend started, people over the years decided that egg cups would be the perfect object to collect. Yessiree, egg cups are collectibles. Beautiful and functional. Someone even wrote a book about The Joy of Collecting Egg Cups! We won’t argue with that!

Pocillovy is the name given to the hobby, which comes from the Latin pocillum ovi, which means a small cup for an egg. Quite niche! A woman by the name of Winnie Freeman, a housewife and collector from Reigate in Surrey, is thought to have invented the term in 1984. Lo and Behold, Winnie’s passion motivated her to write a book about it, called ‘Collecting Egg Cups: An Introduction to Pocivolly’ !
