Fly, Swoop, Glide, Decorate!

A Lesson in Seabirds of Australia.

Gather ‘round, Pulp Ornithophiles. We thought it was high time to make a dedicated list of the wonderful world of Aussie native seabirds. Our shop is near the sea, and so we thought, 'Why not?'

So whaddawetalkin’ about here? We’re talking about birds who live on, over or near the ocean. Role call!

Albatrosses: Large seabirds that are known for their long wingspans and ability to fly vast distances.

Petrels and Shearwaters: Closely  related to albatrosses and are also found in the Southern Hemisphere. city

Terns: Small to medium-sized seabirds that often nest in colonies on islands or rocky outcrops.

Gulls: Common along coastlines and are known for their scavenging habits.

Cormorants: Diving seabirds that are  adept at catching fish and are often found near coastal areas.

Australasian Gannet: Known for its diving abilities and colonies on islands.

Silver Gull: Common  and adaptable gull found throughout Australia, including in urban areas.

Little Penguin: A charismatic lil guy that breeds in colonies along the coast.

These remarkable creatures possess superpowers, with several special adaptations that enable them to thrive in their marine environments.

Count the ways with us:

  • Salt glands near their eyes excrete excess salt from their bloodstream. This allows them to drink saltwater, which is essential for their survival in the ocean. Ahoy!

  • Waterproof feathers 🪶 protect them from getting wet and also insulate them against the cold. Best of both worlds!

  • Some seabirds have adapted their wings into flippers, sacrificing some flight capability to become more efficient swimmers. Umm, if this isn't a superpower, we don’t know what is!

  • Known for their incredible long-distance migrations, some seabirds cross the equator or even circumnavigate the Earth. Take that Singapore Airlines!

  • Keen eyesight is one of their superpowers, helping them spot prey from the water's surface. While you're squinting at the ingredients on the back of your cornflakes packet, these guys have seen the parasite on the back of the fish 20 metres under the water! 💧

We should pay homage to these amazing seabirds!
