Homing pigeons. A very brief history and heartfelt celebration.
Okay, Pulp Besties, we see the thoughtful look on your faces. You’re wondering how people got you messages, news, and other important information from here to there back before the lil’ magic box we call the smartphone. Well, wonder no longer, we are here to spill the birdseed …
One word: Pigeons.
These cute little stout-bodied birds - often nicknamed ‘Homer’ - possess an amazing homing instinct, which means they naturally fly back to their home from very long distances. For example, the longest recorded flight for a homing pigeon is an 11,600 km journey from Arras, France, to Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City), Vietnam, in 1931. This incredible feat took the pigeon 24 days to complete. What a champ!
The ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians were among the first to utilise these little champions of long-distance flight to announce new Pharaohs, convey business information, announce Olympic results, and deliver messages to the front lines of war. Wow!
Communication, pigeon-style, was a one-way deal because they always returned to their home base after delivering the goods. Fair enough! There’s no place like home.
And while technology has pipped pigeons at the post (say that ten times fast!), there is still room for our feathered friends in the modern day and age. They are still used in some remote areas for emergency communication … Tally-ho!
Writing a letter? Don’t think of it as snail mail. Think of it as pigeon mail!
