For Goodness (Keep)Sake

The where, when, and why of keeping something precious close and safe, including words to your loved ones.

Ever heard of The Keepsake Stories by Sir Walter Scott? (The Scottish novelist, poet and historian made himself renowned by inventing the first historical novel. Whoa!)

The Keepsake Stories is a collection of three short stories specifically for children to enhance their vocabulary, spark their imagination and ignite their passion for reading.

Tally ho, Sir Walt, we salute you! But it’s not all about sweet stories that speak to imagination. Let’s explore this concept a lil’ further, shall we, Pulp Besties?

The earliest known use of the word ‘keepsake’ was recorded in 1790 by a woman called Fanny Burney. Frances, as she was known, was a satirical novelist, diarist and playwright. She foreshadowed (and undoubtedly paved the way for) other writers such as Jane Austen and William Makepeace Thackeray. Nice one FB!

It makes sense, then, that even though the word refers to objects or items that you want to ‘keep’ for the ‘sake’ of the giver (of said item), that the greater idea is bound with the written word.

“Like what?” we hear you ask! Like words expressing memories, idioms symbolise and relay personal history, phrases, or poetry directly meant for loved ones.

But where do we keep them? Let us introduce you to:
