But did you know the phrase "bookworm" (or "book work") originates from a 16th-century metaphor based on actual insects, such as silverfish and beetle larvae, that physically bore through book bindings and pages to consume paper and glue?
Historically, the term was a negative insult used in the Elizabethan era. People called someone a "bookworm" to describe a lazy, antisocial idler who read excessively instead of doing manual work. Over the centuries, the term lost its derogatory bite.
Today, it has evolved into an affectionate title for someone who loves reading and studying. Yep, that's us!
