Painting With Words

All The Tools You Need.

"Painting with words". What do you mean? How can it be? Well, it’s a metaphor, actually.

Use words instead of paint. Tap into and inspire your own and other people’s imagination with vivid, sensory-rich language.

Here's the tea :

Engage the reader’s senses of sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch with words only. Give the scene a purpose.

Transform abstract ideas into concrete, memorable, and engaging descriptions - get into detail!

Describe every square centimetre of a rock your character picks up, for example. The angles, weight, temperature and shape.

Don’t skimp on context. Word your reader in on the who, what, when, where, and how. Make the details juicy and utterly fascinating. Make it so that they can’t turn pages fast enough!

OK, OK. BUT. What stationery would you need if you wanted to do all this?

Let us help you spell it out!

The "Canvas" (Paper & Notebooks)

Go for a High-Quality Lined or Blank Journal, like Midori MD, which allows for uninterrupted writing across the spine, encouraging long, flowing descriptive passages.

Midori MD Notebooks A7 | $14.95

The blank type offers the ultimate freedom when putting your ideas on paper. You can even use the two-page spread as a single canvas when drawing.

The type with lines has a thick line at the centre so that you can divide each page in half or divide a two-page spread into quarters. Use it for notes or a diary, or add dates and use it as a schedule.

The grid type has 5mm squares with gaps in between, like the old genko yoshi used for writing in Japan. Every 5 and 10 squares are marked, making it easy to count how many characters are written, and the lines of the grid are pale blue so that they will not interfere with your writing or sketches.

Designed in Japan.

The "Brush" (A Good Pen)

A Comfortable Fountain Pen: A smooth, reliable pen (like a Kaweco Fountain Pen) makes long writing sessions pleasurable and encourages a steady, thoughtful pace

KAWECO Perkeo Fountain Pens | $39.99

The Perkeo series offers modern and ergonomic design in contemporary colours to introduce you to the world of writing. The term calligraphy, derived from the Greek, includes two important aspects: recording a text in a beautiful and expressive form.

M - Medium Nib.

F - Fine Nib.

The "Palette" (Editing & Structural Tools)

Correction Tapes: Allows for quick, clean edits to the draft without disrupting the flow of thought.

Cream Correction Tape | $6.95

We all make mistakes, and sometimes a mistake can lead to unexpected pathways in a good way, but if you really wanna cover your tracks (change of mind, misspelling, accidental comma when there should be a full stop), correction tape is essential.

Cream Correction Tape.

Red 4mm w. 6m length.

Green 6mm w. 6m length.

Show 'n' Tell

"Show" rather than "tell" to make scenes, emotions, or characters feel tangible.

Keep your tools organised and accessible, ensuring you don't lose the flow of inspiration when "painting" your scene.

Breathe, imagine and put pen to paper. xx
