A Charmed Life. Even on Friday The 13th.

It’s that day again.

And again, it’s a date that people seem to think brings anti-luck. Non-luck. Or something like that. But why? Every year has a minimum of one and maximum of three Friday the 13s, so we may as well get used to standing on this day with confidence and acceptance that it’s all gonna be just fine.

Let’s go through some reasons for this day getting a bad rap, according to that big old computer brain that resides in the ether (AKA The Internet) …

In Norse mythology, the number 13 is famously associated with a dinner party in Valhalla, where 12 gods were present. The trickster god Loki arrived uninvited as the 13th guest and orchestrated the death of the beloved god Balder, bringing sorrow to the world. The real question is: What does Chris Hemsworth have to say about this!?

Ancient civilisations, including the Sumerians and Babylonians, often considered 12 a "perfect" or complete number (e.g., 12 months, 12 zodiac signs). The number 13 was seen as an irregular, disruptive addition that broke this harmony. OK, OK, let’s leave that idea of “Mathematical Imperfection” behind us already!

Ancient References, Anyone? In the Code of Hammurabi (c. 1700s BC), the laws reportedly skip from number 12 to 14, suggesting an early cultural avoidance of 13. Similarly, ancient Babylonian poetry, such as the Song of Ishtar, associates the 13th line with the Goddess of the Dead. Fun fact: some hotels “don’t have” a 13th floor, so people never have to stay on it!

And if you’re still thinking about the 13th of it all, here are some "Lucky" Dates you can put in your diary….
